Farmlevel Story

Musa Abalulesa farms coffee near the town of Beshasha in the Gomma region of Agaro. He began his career producing exclusively natural-processed coffee. After winning a 2006 competition hosted by the African Fine Coffees Association, he used the prize money and a new depulper to start producing washed coffee. Since then, he has consistently reinvested his profits into expanding his land holdings and improving his infrastructure. Today, he farms nearly 50 hectares, has built new drying beds, acquired shade cloth for better drying control and constructed a larger warehouse.

Musa Abalulesa expanded his operations to include purchasing and processing cherries from his neighbors. Through this process, he earned their trust and was elected to lead a group of local farmers. Since 2016, when Ethiopian laws changed to allow producers to self-export, he has been exporting coffee under his own name.

His success as a direct exporter has inspired many of his neighbors to follow suit, seeking higher prices for their coffee. He masterfully blends organic, traditional farming methods with a modern, diversified business approach. Beyond coffee, he cultivates avocados, keeps honey bees and operates a seed production business with his brother, Mustefa, selling seeds to local government seed banks.

Musa Abalulesa’s dedication and innovation make him an inspiration to his community and his exceptional coffee continues to inspire and dazzle us.
