Farmlevel Story

The Kangocho Factory sits approximately 1,800 meters above sea level in the town of Karatina. It is one of several factories operated by the Gikanda Farmers’ Cooperative Society, which supports producers across the renowned Nyeri region of Kenya.

Beyond processing and quality control, the Kangocho Factory offers valuable resources to its members, including agronomical training, medical support, and educational loans. Most farms in this region are small, with an average of 300 coffee trees per farm. These trees are often grown alongside fruit and shade trees and annual crops for animal feed. This polyculture approach helps stabilize microclimates, enrich soil health, and support biodiversity, all of which contribute to better coffee quality.

At the factory, cherries undergo a 12 to 16-hour fermentation before being washed with clean water from the Gatomboya Stream. They are then graded and dried on raised beds for up to 14 days. During this time, the coffee is regularly turned to ensure even drying and ideal moisture content.

Gikanda is both Fairtrade and Organic Certified, but their commitment to sustainability goes even further. In their own words: “We are committed to sustainable farming practices that not only enhance our coffee but also protect our environment. We’re not just coffee growers; we’re guardians of tradition and stewards of the environment, ensuring each cup of Gikanda Coffee represents a sustainable legacy.”
