Farmlevel Story

Natural coffees from Ethiopia’s Buku Alaka region, particularly the Hambela Wamena district in the Guji Zone, are known for their clarity, vibrancy, and distinct flavor profiles. Here, small-scale farmers cultivate heirloom Arabica varieties at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,300 meters above sea level.

These farmers deliver freshly harvested cherries to the Buku washing station, managed by METAD Agricultural Development. Led by brothers Aman, Tariku, and Michael, METAD is a family-owned company dedicated to sustainable farming and quality improvement. They support local producers through agricultural training, free seedlings, and financial incentives, including a quality bonus that pays 216% above the market price.

The natural processing method used at Buku plays a crucial role in shaping this coffee’s character. The process involves removing the outer fruit layers after drying the beans on raised beds. This meticulous approach enhances the coffee’s sweetness and layered profile, allowing the natural flavors of the region to shine through.

Grown in fertile soil and shaped by high elevation and ideal climate, this coffee is a vibrant reflection of Ethiopia’s rich and celebrated coffee heritage.
